He then obtained his M.S. in industrial chemistry while serving as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy before attending medical school at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Notably, Dr. Toy graduated as the top student in his medical school class and later augmented his medical expertise with a Masters in Business Administration from UNC Chapel Hill.
Following his graduation from medical school in 2003, Dr. Toy completed a residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Tennessee-Campbell Clinic Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and a fellowship in orthopedic oncology at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Throughout his career, Dr. Toy has remained at the forefront of orthopedic innovation, particularly in outpatient total joint replacement in Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASC). Recognizing the potential for improved patient outcomes, he began performing ASC total hip and knee replacements in 2013. To date, he has successfully completed over 1500 such procedures, achieving improved clinical results, increased patient satisfaction, and fewer complications compared to traditional total joint replacement. Dr. Toy has served as a consultant for surgeons who wish to add outpatient total joint replacement to their practice and spoken on this topic at many orthopedic meetings.
Dr. Toy attributes his success to a rigorous adherence to strict preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative protocols, as well as advanced surgical techniques. These include the direct anterior approach to total hip replacement and ROSA robotic-assisted total knee replacement.
His areas of expertise include:
- Outpatient Total Joint Replacement
- ROSA Robotic Assisted Total Knee Replacement
- Direct Anterior Total Hip Replacement
- Smart Total Joint Implants
While total joint replacement surgery is a large part of his practice, he also sees a wide range of sports injuries, pediatric & adult trauma, and sub-specializes in orthopedic oncology.
Dr. Toy's transition to OrthoOne in 2024 marks an exciting new chapter in his career. This move will enable him to structure a more patient-centered practice, further enhancing his ability to provide personalized, cutting-edge orthopedic care. By combining his extensive experience, academic background, and commitment to innovation, Dr. Toy aims to set new standards in patient care and surgical outcomes at OrthoOne.
